Service Description

Day: Wednesdays Time: 11am - 12:30pm Location: Pasadena (WK) Cost: $525 Ages: Motivated middle and high school students at any level are welcome to join Instructor: Suzanne Smith I have a extensive background in writing, grammar, and literary analysis (in both English and Spanish), and last year taught English 9 using the UC Scout curriculum. I plan to follow the general UC Scout structure of using various readings to teach literary concepts, structure, and analysis, and to teach students to write and critique their own and others' work. We'll read a wide range of US-based authors and genres: some of these authors, like Steinbeck, are part of the traditional literary canon and included in UC Scout, while others – such as Pasadena native Octavia Butler and science writer Mary Roach – diversify the canon. We'll read some fiction, some poetry, plays, specific types of nonfiction, and other works as time and class interests allow. I expect students to manage their own work -- I won't hound them to turn in an assignment, and I typically allow students to turn in assignments late. I do ask, however, that students do required reading BEFORE class, since class will function like a seminar and include discussions. About your instructor: Suzanne Smith (she/her) I've been teaching and tutoring formally for about four years at Urban Homeschoolers and on an independent basis. I specialize in teaching Spanish, but I've also taught and tutored English and history (US, Latin American, and Los Angeles history and culture). I have a BA in History and Latin American Studies from Wesleyan University, and a MA in Latin American history from the University of Texas at Austin. I began studying Spanish in 7th grade and continued studying, reading, and writing all through high school, college, and graduate school. I've studied in Mexico and Spain and used Spanish in a professional capacity in various jobs.
