2x per week: Mondays, 1-2pm and Wednesdays; 12:45-1:45pm. (when you book on the calendar it will say 12:30 but the class begins at 12:45. Location: Pasadena (KS & WK) Cost: $525 Instructor: Suzanne Smith I'm moving from a traditional, grammar-based instruction toward the 'comprehensible input' model that is now being used in many school districts around the country. This involves giving students a great deal of input in Spanish using words, pictures, charades, and other vehicles for communicating. Ongoing research shows that students may struggle at first, but that learning via input -- the way that babies learn language -- is a much more effective way to get them speaking and reading. Grammar is taught as it arises in natural conversation, but the emphasis is on speaking and writing in a way that is comprehensible to others. I plan to use elements of the SOMOS curriculum in conjunction with elements of the UC Scout Spanish 1 curriculum that I encountered last year. In my experience, a little work every day in Spanish will lead to faster acquisition than doing assignments in spurts. For that reason, I may also assign work from an online program like Duolingo or Conjuguemos to give more authentic input and opportunities to learn. About the instructor: Suzanne Smith (she/her) I've been teaching and tutoring formally for about four years at Urban Homeschoolers and on an independent basis. I specialize in teaching Spanish, but I've also taught and tutored English and history (US, Latin American, and Los Angeles history and culture). I have a BA in History and Latin American Studies from Wesleyan University, and a MA in Latin American history from the University of Texas at Austin. I began studying Spanish in 7th grade and continued studying, reading, and writing all through high school, college, and graduate school. I've studied in Mexico and Spain and used Spanish in a professional capacity in various jobs.
